Introduction to bidding systems

Most bidding systems are not optimal, probably because they are developed in the wrong order by starting with the one in a suit openings. These one in a suit openings are simple, but the 2♣ and 2 openings contain different types of hands. With these two level openings there is less space available to describe the hands. Moreover, the 1♣ opening bid is not clear, because 1♣ is opened on a completely different hands from a balanced hand and 2 clubs with 12 pts up to one, two or three suiters with 20 pts. The Polish Club system is already a step in the right direction because the 1♣ opening bid contains three different types of hands. In the system described here, this principle is further implemented by including three different types of hands in the 1 opening bid. These openings are combined with the structure of the Fantunes system. Fantunes Lite has the following advantages:

  • it is very natural and therefore easy to remember;
  • all strong hands are in 1♣, so only after an opening bid of 1♣ a possible weak response has to be taken into account;
  • it is an offensive system (the 2♣///♠ openings are common and are pre-emptive).

Fantunes Lite

Fantoni and Nunes use a bidding system which is quite different from the usual systems like SAYC or ACOL. On the internet some information can be found, including a simplified version developed by Gerben Dirksen. This version is even simpler and it is mainly a natural system. This system is based partly on Fantunes, but with elements of a five-card major system and the Polish Club system. The system can be extended with conventions such as Stayman, Jacoby transfers, Blackwood, fourth suit forcing, etc.
